Should the positive deviance approach be applied to every change initiative?
The positive deviance approach is a standardized approach to change that emphasizes on the role of the community in igniting desirable changes in the community. The community are regarded as the owners of the problem, and have the primary responsibility in identifying the problems and taking an action towards solving the question. The leaders acts as facilitators of the change through empowering the community to make desirable changes. This approach differs from the traditional approach, where leaders, through the help of experts identify problems in the community and develop solutions towards. Leaders ignite the change in the community based on their own assessment of the problem, and the solutions are more logic driven. Moreover, the traditional approach follows the outside-in practice where change begins from outside, while the deviance approach follows the inside-out practice where change begins from inside. However, the deviance change should not be applied to every change initiative. The approach should be used ignite changes that requires working harder and smarter, and the change relies on brainpower. In changes requiring behavior change, positive deviance approach is not appropriate as it may not achieve the desired change. In a situation where other remedies are not available, positive deviance approach may be applied....
