Homosexuality refers to a person’s inclination toward the same sex. Here, the individuals do not identify themselves as the opposite of their biological nature. By contrast, transgenderism is secondary to an individual’s confusion between one’s physical characteristics and the given gender by society. Furthermore, the person considers oneself as the member of the sex opposite of his or her biological nature. Transgenders may or may not experience homosexuality.
(b) Explain in detail the rationale behind twin studies. Discuss how such
investigations show the genetic basis of homosexuality. (10 marks).
The twin studies gathered identical or fraternal twins and the researchers studied their responses or actions based on the environmental and genetic aspects, including their physical traits, diseases, and phenotypes. Generally, this was done to understand the argument of nature versus nurture. Remarkably, the debate is supported by the individual’s preferences (nurture) versus one’s genetic tendencies (nature).
The study theorized that if homosexuality is based on nature, then the identical twins will have an almost equal predisposition to becoming homosexual. The concordance rate of identical female and male twins are high. Therefore, the twin studies demonstrated that homosexuality is influenced by nature or genetics.
