Implications to the field
As mentioned previously, it will help with grading to identify your article as theoretical or empirical. For empirical articles, please be sure to (briefly) identify the design of your study. (Is it a randomized controlled experiment? Is it a pseudo-experiment? A case study? What are the conditions? How are the groups determined?) Do not simply state the conclusion without describing the experimental conditions.
For example:
Correct: Participants were randomly assigned to two groups. Students who took a test in a room with ambient music answered more questions correctly than students who took a test in a room that was completely silent. The authors determined that there was evidence that ambient music was beneficial to student performance.
Incorrect: The authors found that ambient music was preferable to silence for student performance on tests.
Thesis: The first section is a good overview of the article, but it is still lacking a clear identification of the article's thesis statement Implications: The first sentence is almost a direct copy/paste from the abstract, and does not explain HOW this research is breaking boundaries or how the insights collected in the review can be used to advance theory or practice within any of the listed sub-fields. to clarify some of the expectations regarding the "implications" section of the article contribution assignments. The implications section is intended to stretch your critical analysis beyond how it relates to the assigned readings into how and why it is significant for the field. Guide your thinking in the following way: why are you sharing this article with the class? What did you hope for your classmates to gain from reading this article? Be specific. Discuss how the insights from your article can be applied to matters of educational practice or policy, or the development of educational theories. please be sure that when you are summarizing articles, you state the article's thesis and not simply its research question. To use the example above again, the research question of such a hypothetical study might be "Does ambient noise affect student performance on a multiple-choice exam?" Stating only this question, or that a study is investigating the impact of ambient noise on student performance, does not give the reader information as to what the authors hypothesized when performing the study. There are in fact three potential hypotheses that could be made with this research question: 1) ambient noise improves student performance on an exam 2) ambient noise is detrimental to student performance on an exam 3) ambient noise does not affect student performance on exams at all (this is called the null hypothesis) Please be sure to specify in your summaries the authors' thesis/hypothesis and if their data provided evidence for or against their hypothesis.
