Multiculturalism and acceptance are central to humanistic psychology, which deals with diversity by analyzing individual characteristics and experiences that influence societal differences (Hoffman, 2012). The humanistic school of thought supports diversity and acceptance secondary to its inherent interpersonal viewpoint (DeRobertis, 2015).
Humanistic psychology promotes social embeddedness in the context of living organisms. It combines the concepts of nature and nurture and takes into consideration one’s dynamic development. The changes in every person become cumulative and end up influencing the changes in others. It emphasizes the “shared sense of being,” where one person, despite his reluctance, is aware that other people are alive and one is inevitably related to the others. This thought promotes acceptance because it emphasizes similarities instead of differences, no matter the distance of the gap is. It is a holistic approach that examines individuality in the form of collectivism, focusing more on the person’s strengths rather than the weaknesses (DeRobertis, 2015).
