After reviewing various psychoanalytic theorists, I believe that Skinner’s theory of instrumental conditioning, which hypothesizes that the consequences of a response influence the likelihood of it being repeated, is most relevant to my chosen profession of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Through operant conditioning, rewarded behavior is likely to reoccur while that which is punished is less likely to repeat (Henley, 2019). As the most widely accepted therapy for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), ABA is based on evidence-based practices: operant conditioning.
