Wit Assignment
Background
We are using the play (Wit) to learn about patient-provider and provider-provider interactions and identify some of the things patients and providers need.
The five theories are tools to help explain the characters' behaviors and thinking.
To learn when and how to use the theories generally requires practice and time. Thus, we stop the movie and examine how and why the characters in the play influence each other, using the theories to better explain the character's behaviors and thinking.
Wit can also help us learn how healthcare organizations function. The play offers models of what NOT to do and well as what TO DO.
To help you better understand the play and the characters you also have links to excerpts from the play (via YouTube) and two reviews/analysis of the play. Look in the Resources for Wit folder in this module.
Assignment
The Wit assignment asks you to do the following things:
1) Select a scene in the play (your choice).
2) Select one of the theories we are using in the course (your choice).
3) Apply the theory to explain the interactions in the scene.
4) Create a paper - not more than two pages in length identifying your scene selection, identifying your theory choice, offering a clear explanation of the theory, and they applying the theory to the selection.
5) You will need citations and references.
6) We use APA style formatting in this course.

The play (Wit) can be used to understand the needs of both the patients and the healthcare providers. It brings out the gaps in the healthcare setup as it focuses, from the characters, on the interactions between patients and healthcare providers and among healthcare providers themselves.
This paper focuses on scene 3 of the play, where Vivian, fifty, is back at the hospital. In this scene, Vivian is getting a chest X-ray, and the technicians performing the X-ray ask her several questions about herself. Even though her treatment has begun, Vivian is still detached from the reality of her situation and instead focused on making the technicians understand her academic credentials. She emphasizes her formidable academic accomplishments to make her feel powerful and in control and separate herself from the complicated reality of sickness and treatment procedures. However, the technicians are detached and uninterested in her unique academic accomplishments and handle her like any other patient. The scene reveals more about Vivian, her personal life and relationships, and her contributions to the field of English Literature. The set also introduces other characters, including Jason and Susie, who bring out different themes in this scene through their interaction with the patient. The further interaction with the patient by Jason and Susie presents a unique study area of human behavior and thinking. It points out major issues in the healthcare setup that need to be addressed.
