Whitney Houston's Cover of the Song 'I Will Always Love You' by Dolly Parton

Essay Instructions:

For this assignment, research a song that was originally recorded by the artist who composed it and that was then covered—recorded again—by another artist. The cover version (and possibly the original, too) should be the work of a fairly popular artist.
In a report of 300–600 words, introduce the original version of the song and explain whether it was a success. Then introduce the cover version, and explain whether that was a success. Finally, consider the reason(s) why one version may have been more successful than the other. For example, did the cover artist record the song for any particular reason? Remember to cite your sources.

Cover Song Report
Dolly Parton wrote and recorded “I Will Always Love You” in 1973. Although the song sounded like Parton was leaving a romantic relationship, it was not the case. Instead, she released that song to mark the end of her professional career at Porter Wagoner’s Show (Finn, 2020). In 1992, Whitney Houston re-recorded the song “I Will Always Love You,” which became very popular. In addition, Houston’s version of the song was used as a soundtrack in the film The Bodyguard. The paper focuses on the song “I Will Always Love You,” written and recorded by Parton and re-recorded by Houston, who made it iconic.

Despite numerous individuals thinking that the song depicts the end of a romantic relationship, it was not. The song starts, “If I should stay, Well I would only be in your way, And so I’ll go, And yet I know, I’ll think of you each step of the way, And I will always love you, I will always love you” (Finn, 2020). The song became popular since it was simple, short, and Parton’s voice made it outstanding.
The cover version of “I Will Always Love You” by Houston became more popular and iconic. Specifically, it has 1,146,270,063 views on YouTube (Houston, 2010). Houston did the a cappella of the song, which was used as a love song in a particular scene in The Bodyguard. The cover version became more popular than the original version due to Houston’s vocals and high notes. Houston also touched on the sense of sorrow and created the proper framework for it (Reich, 2021). “I Will Always Love You” chang...
