Units 7 and 8 have been devoted to understanding social/emotional development in infancy/toddlerhood, childhood, and adolescence. For this Assignment, please use the Unit 8 Assignment Template to write a 2-page descriptive essay tracing the development of self-understanding throughout the stages by focusing on the development of self-awareness and self-control in infancy/toddlerhood and the development of the self-concept and self-esteem in early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence. Provide at least one detailed example of development of these self-understanding concepts for each stage and be sure to cite the textbook information/research findings to support your ideas.
For each of the four stages, consider the role that parents play in their child’s development of self. How can parents promote self-awareness and self-control in infancy/toddlerhood and how can parents promote self-concept and self-esteem in early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence?

Self-awareness and self-control are part of several skills which allow people to manage their emotions, actions, and thoughts to help them do certain things such as waiting in line, sitting still, and taking turns. However, self-control is a complex skill that develops with time. Children build self-control when they are young, and the skill keeps developing even when approaching adulthood. As children get old, they develop self-control in movement, impulse, and emotions. The development of self-understanding from early childhood to adolescence is essential in the growth of every child.
Infants communicate and express themselves by moving their bodies. Additionally, they use their bodies to get closer to their parents and caregivers. As memories about their experiences continue to grow, they begin to develop a self-understanding. For instance, when a child is closer to their caregiver, they feel comfortable and safe. Parents can promote a child’s self-understanding in such a stage by spending time with them and supporting their interests (Lally, 2017). One way is to ensure the child is close by and gift them with playful and colorful toys.
Children begin to develop a self-concept during early childhood through values, attitudes, attributes, and abilities that seem to define them. By the time they reach age three, they develop their categorical self. For instance, young kids label themselves according to their age, sex, and physical characteristics.
