Introduction
Culturally responsive and socially just (CRSJ) counselling is a unique technique in counseling that focuses on unifying cultural sensitivity and awareness, into counselling practices to develop a culturally responsive and pluralistic counselling approach. According to social scientist Collins (2018), this mode of counselling also integrates an understanding of social justice as an integral part of counselling to develop goals and counselling practices considering the client’s cultural and social identity (p.52). Based on Pinel & Barnes’ perspective of biopsychology, social issues are part of all person’s life, and I have had such an experience for a short spell of time (p 82); despite my reasonably adequate income and affordability, I experienced a shortage of availability of affordable living in my desired neighborhood of Toronto Canada. However, my counselling sessions with a trained and professional counsellor facilitated my understanding of the social and cultural factors behind my housing crisis. Moreover, by using the CRSJ framework of counselling, the counsellor made social and culturally sensitive counselling to help me set new goals and change my preference to resolve this issue. My counselling session was fruitful as the counsellor rightly identified the role of financial constraints, the social trends of upscaling the living standards, and the increase in the cost of living in urban centers as the social factors behind my problem. Moreover, the counsellor highlighted the role of family trends, ethnicity, and social norms as the cultural factors aggravating my housing problems.
The use of the CRSJ framework to conduct social and cultural counselling proved useful to me as it helped me identify the underlying factors behind my social dilemma; moreover, the subsequent therapeutic sessions helped me implement effective strategies to develop the social and cultural competence required to overcome my social dilemma. Hence, the following discussion provides details of my first-hand experience of my counselling experience.
