The sensorimotor stage is the first of four stages that were suggested and advanced by Jean Piaget as pertains to the cognitive development of infants. This theory extends to young children between birth and two years; it is essential to note that during this period, infants tend to interact and understand the environment through trial and error. This theory assumes that infants focus on discovering the relationships which exist between themselves and the environment and that this is mainly done through their sensory abilities.
The central concepts of this theory are well articulated; it has explained how a child is likely to behave when he or she experiences pleasurable activity, for example, a child is likely to suck their fingers since the simulation which is experienced is pleasant and enjoyable (McLeod, 2019).
