Empathic: An Unappreciated Way of Being
According to Rogers, Carl R. (p. 5) the primary aspect of empathy is the ability of the counselor to relate with the client in a way that the counselor understands what the client is experiencing. In other words, it is the capacity of the counselor not only to wear but also walk in the client's shoes. In his counseling approach, Carl Ransom Rogers applied the client-centered therapy. It is a more humanistic approach to counseling, also referred to as person-centered therapy. From the case I can firmly confirm that Carl believed for a counselor to get to the core of another person's issue or problems, then the counselor must build trust. Besides, the counselor must develop a healthy working relationship with his client.
Empathy takes many forms, and its definition as well covers a broad scope. According to Carl, a counselor must establish the correct attitudes and behaviors that will make the client comfortable to open up. As such, it is easy to get not only manifest but also the accurate list of issues or the description of the client's problem. To do this, one art that the counselor must learn and perfect is the listening skill. To be a good counselor, you must be ready and willing to listen to your clients without making unnecessary interruptions (Rogers, Carl R., 146). As a counselor, you must also show that you are with the client and following up in the conversation. As such, you shall have developed a climate that not only fosters trust but also enhances the art of counseling.
