Classical condition Psychology Essay Research Paper
When psychologists started to study classical conditioning with drug outcomes, they discovered the conditioned compensatory response. First, what is the conditioned compensatory response and use the study by Siegel et al. (1982) on heroin tolerance to describe the phenomenon? Second, does the conditioned compensatory response account for all of the tolerance observed in the study by Siegel et al. (1982)? Provide your reasoning. Third, how would you test the conditioned compensatory response for a stimulant like amphetamine? Briefly describe your proposed study and expected results. Fourth, and lastly, what could be done to prevent the conditioned compensatory response associated with drug use?

1 What is the conditioned compensatory response and use the study by Siegel et al. (1982) on heroin tolerance to describe the phenomenon?
The conditioned compensatory response used in the study by Siegel et al. (1982) examines the failure of some drug users to tolerate doses of heroin. The study utilized Pavlovian conditioning, which suggests that the use of environmental cues during the increasing administration of an unconditioned stimulus (i.e., central effects of the drug) results to tolerance due to the combined interpretation of the central nervous system (CNS). The CNS associates the environmental cues with the unconditioned stimulus.
2 Does the conditioned compensatory response account for all of the tolerance observed in the study by Siegel et al. (1982)? Provide your reasoning.
Yes. The study by Siegel et al. (1982) showed that between the control and experimental rat groups that received a lethal dose of heroin, the group that has received a deadly heroin dose that has an associated environmental cue of the dose is just a sublethal dose were more likely to survive. The rats which were not subjected to a conditioned compensatory response to a sublethal dose died when given a lethal heroin dose.
3 How would you test the conditioned compensatory response for a stimulant like amphetamine? Briefly describe your proposed study and expected results.
To test the conditioned compensatory response for amphetamine, a control, and an experimental group using rats as subjects will be examined. Male and female lab rats will be selected and examined based on their appearances and other factors. The lab rats will be categorized into a control and a...
