Darryl Inaba and William Cohen assert that numerous current studies are based on the concept of addiction as a brain disease. In particular, I believe that addiction significantly affects individuals’ brain memory, motivation, and reward system (Inaba & Cohen, 2014). For instance, a person’s motivations are altered by addictive behaviors that replace self-care and healthy traits. In my opinion, addiction starts with an individual’s voluntary decision of using specific drugs. Many people do not hope that they will become addicts at the beginning. As such, the change that occurs making a voluntary drug user become an addict or compulsive drug user has everything to do with one’s brain alterations.
The combination of processes and neuroadaptations that are experienced from the repeated use of drugs involves the rewiring of how the brain functions. I think that the changes in brain function and structure determine the expression and development of addiction, which makes it a brain disease.
