Noncontingent reinforcement is when a person is given a reward for doing something that has not been requested to show them that they need not act out to get a reward. That may be a reward you receive from your teacher, money or praise, the food you enjoy, or items you find to be valuable. For example, parents may take their children out during the weekend to prevent their children from fighting each other. Research shows that negative reinforcement helps in the development of superstitious behavior (Hayashi & Modico, 2019). Superstitious behavior originates from the belief in the existence of a divine force or power, the efficacy of charms and prayers, or the operation of supernatural powers. Enthusiasts of superstitious behavior are known as believers.
