High-level leadership positions are no longer reserved for white, middle-aged heterosexual males with MBAs. On the contrary, today's leaders come from diverse cultures and backgrounds. When working with clients, leadership coaches must be aware of how diversity (e.g., race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, educational background, religion, political beliefs) might influence coaching for leadership development. Specifically, coaches should consider clients' thought processes, behaviors, and actions within the context of their cultures and backgrounds. For instance, leadership behaviors that may seem odd or counterproductive in one culture may not be viewed as such in another culture. In addition to considering clients' diversity, coaches must also be conscious of their own diversity and how their particular assumptions, biases, and prejudices could negatively affect the coaching process and the coach-client relationship.
To prepare for this assignment:
Review the article, "Dear White Boss..." and the online chapter, "Developing the Effectiveness of a High-Potential African American Executive: The Anatomy of a Coaching Engagement." Pay particular attention to the possible considerations related to coaching African American clients. Think about how coaches might address these considerations.
Review the online chapter, "Executive Growth along the Adult Development Curve." Reflect on developmental challenges clients of various age groups might encounter. Consider how coaches might help clients address these developmental challenges.
Review the online chapter, "Multimodal Therapy: A Useful Model for the Executive Coach." Consider how diversity (e.g., race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation) might influence the first six modalities of Lazarus's Multimodal Model. With this in mind, think about diversity considerations coaches might make related to a client's personality.
Review the article, "Executive Coaching in a Cross-Cultural Context." Think about how diversity considerations might influence coaches' selections of coaching strategies. Consider the author's guidelines for coaching diverse clients and think about how you might use each guideline to address diversity considerations.
Review the Course Case Studies. Consider at least one diversity consideration you might make in each case study and why. Think about how you might address each of these considerations.

In the case of Feng, I would look at the influence of the people’s perception of his effectiveness in leadership positions. Feng is a 63 year old Asian male, but he was mostly effective in research quality and his elevation into a director will be a different experience. Focusing on the biases that people hold and his own beliefs will provide insights on the effectiveness of his leadership. According to Caver and Livers (2002), fellow workers at times make assumptions about African American employees that they are more likely to be asked questions about race relations while at work rather than those pertaining to their qualifications. There is a likelihood that Feng will face challenges because it would be assumed that his technical knowhow and research skills are good, but not so for his leadership skills. According to Peterson, (2007) coaches need to navigate the complexities and help the coaches to make clear objectives based on clear goals where they are committed to action.  To address the diversity considerations when working with Feng, I would need to get his perspective about the workplace culture and perception of the other employees. Coaches need to be cautious not to make assumptions or rely on stereotypes about the coachee’s culture to be effective (Peterson, 2007). I would also focus on how the employees negotiate social interactions since multicultural coaching will improve cultural awareness. Even though, Feng has worked in the company for more than two decades, he lacks leadership experience and has no idea how the employees will view his appointment as an Asian man. Decision making and expectation about Lila’s ability to manage as a chief operating officer (COO) will be taken into consideration.   Her gender and young age need to be considered when coaching her as she is working hard and yet some employees still delegate tasks to her rather than the other way round. Lila is facing the challenge of taking on too many tasks instead of delegating, but she should be willing to utilize unfamiliar approaches to improve productivity among the other employees. When there is more flexibility in the workplace, it is easier for the employees to meet the set expectations Lila is a young woman leader and for others to take her seriously there is a needed to demonstrate that she can lead.
