Climate change threatens global public health, especially among vulnerable populations. The World Health Organization (2021) states that one significant threat climate change poses is the risks associated with air pollution. People with pre-existing respiratory conditions are more likely to experience exacerbations when air pollution levels are high. The vulnerable population is more likely to live in polluted areas, increasing their risk of health problems. Furthermore, the American Public Health Association has identified several health impacts of climate change, including changes in infectious disease distribution. (American Public Health Association, 2022). These diseases are prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions, which are home to vulnerable populations. In addition, according to Domingo et al. (2018), the increased intensity of extreme weather patterns is a significant threat posed by climate change. Extreme heat events can lead to heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and other heat-related illnesses that are more likely to occur in elderly individuals and young children. Therefore, climate change poses a significant threat to global public health affecting vulnerable populations.
2 Besides recycling, what can an individual do to combat climate change? Please provide three (3) examples.
There are numerous ways that people can contribute to combating climate change. People can reduce meat consumption. Since animal agriculture contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, reducing the amount of meat consumed is an effective way to help combat climate change (Sanchez-Sabate et al., 2019). People can also take public transportation or carpool (Ozodjonovna, 2023). Individuals can reduce their carbon footprint by taking public transportation, biking, walking, or carpooling. Lastly, one can reduce their energy consumption (Bazazzadeh, 2021). One may switch off lights and devices when not in use and use energy-efficient appliances.
3 Besides recycling, what can a nurse do in their work environment to improve environmental health? Please provide two (2) examples.
