Developing an idea for a research study is a process, where a topic of interest or social problem gets translated into a research problem that can be explored using accepted systematic procedures for recruiting participants, collecting data, and analyzing and interpreting results.
In this week’s Discussion, you considered what you might want to study. In your first Major Assignment, you will have the first-hand experience of translating that idea into a viable research problem that is a good fit for a qualitative approach. But, before you begin this Assignment, please consider the following concepts:
Ontology is defined as the assumptions one makes about the nature of reality. In qualitative studies, researchers assume that “reality” is constructed from personal experience and context.
Example: If four people see a car accident from different points of view, they will see it differently depending on their position (context) and personal experience.
So consider a topic where the experiences of participants will be one of your primary sources of data, and your “job” as a qualitative researcher is to do your best to understand your sources’ unique experiences.
Epistemology is defined as the assumptions one makes about the relationship between the researcher and the object of study.
Example: If the researcher collects survey data from an accident witness, it is different than if the researcher engages with the witness in person using an open-ended interview format.
So, consider a topic where you will be able to be part of the data gathering experience, and that your “job” as a qualitative researcher is to distinguish your experience from your sources.
A research problem emerges from an understanding of what prior research studies have found, and what, according to that body of literature, needs to be done next.
Thus, before you commit to a topic for this Assignment, it is essential to review published research studies on your topic.
Overview
The purpose of this Major Assignment is for you to gain experience in taking a topic of your interest and considering it as a possibility for a qualitative research study.
Major Assignment 1 is composed of three parts, as described further in the Overview and Assignment Guidelines document.
For this week’s Assignment:
Review the expectations of the Major Assignment 1: Developing a Research Topic for a Qualitative Study Overview and Guidelines. (Note: Make sure you review it in its entirety before you begin.)
Review Discussion 2 to explore possible topics for this Major Assignment.

Part 1: Problem Statement
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia, accounting for 60-80% of dementia cases (Alzheimer’s Association).  Alzheimer’s is manifested as the progressive loss of cognitive function, in behavioral disorders and the inability to carry out the simplest tasks, which affects memory, thinking, and behavior. Young-onset Alzheimer’s disease has not been widely explored as in the case of older people, yet research would reduce the caregiver burden and improve health outcome (Hutchinson et al., 2016). Alzheimer’s before the age of 65 is rare, but the behavioral and psychological symptoms may already be deteriorating.  Family history and risk assessment are considered in predictive testing to better understand Alzheimer and ways to manage the disease.
Nyman & Szymczynska (2016) argued that integrating psychosocial theories in the care of older adults living with dementia improves their wellbeing as they are more likely to be active. In the Stanley et al. (2014) research three out of four studies reviewed showed that there is a faster decline in the cognitive functioning among people with early onset Alzheimer’s, including attention and working memory deficits.  Even as there is deterioration of memory in older patients, this is mostly in naming and recalling (Stanley et al., 2014). The risk of an increased rate of Alzheimer’s progression is potentially a risk factor to worsening health outcomes compared to late onset. According to Caselli et al. (2015) predictive for susceptibility to Alzheimer’s helps evaluate the risk worsening health outcomes and even suicidal ideation among those living with Alzheimer’s.
Cognitive impairment remains one of the biggest challenges to proving the quality of life in people with Alzheimer’s, yet new techniques, imaging studies, genetics, and lab testing Alzheimer’s disease make it easier to diagnose the symptoms when they first appear. Systematic screening to diagnose the diseases ought to target those who are already showing symptoms or at risk because family history and helps to evaluate the extent of cognitive impairment. Prevention of Alzheimer remains a top priority among neuroscientists, and as research has mostly focused on the elderly even research funding targets this group. However, predictive testing on young people and their family members has the potential to offer insights on how best to optimize patient outcomes.
Part 2: Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the young people’s experiences predictive testing for Alzheimer’s would be a help or a hindrance. As such, young people with a strong family history of dementia are the optimal study group.  Predictive testing is closely linked to risk assessment, as there is a focus on whether close family members are also at risk. Genetic counseling and support are prioritized to ensure the participants understand the need for predictive testing and implications to their health.
Detection before the disease causes cognitive decline and th...
