Introduction
Economically, many states in the world suffer from the problem of income inequality. Therefore, it is the aim of every state to ensure that income disparities among its citizens are reduced. According to Richard Wilkinson, a society will be healthier and happier if the gap between the rich and poor is small. This is in comparison to states with large income disparities. Income inequality is well shown and explained by use of a Lorenz curve. Therefore, I will discuss and expound my knowledge on income disparities in reference to Richard Wilkinson articles and talks.
What are the main points made by Richard Wilkinson?
Richard Wilkinson is a renowned professor of epidemiology in the University of Nottingham. In his scholarly works on the analyses of the US in terms of income inequality, the prolific scholar focuses on a number of points that I have discussed below.
In his works, Richard focuses on the equality of trust which aims to bring equality in a state. This nonprofit also suggests that the only way in which a state can use in order to reduce inequality, is to educate the public and involve them in other programs. Through this, the state will be able to achieve social cohesion since the efforts of different people will be integrated together.
Wilkinson also puts focus on a model in which people mind how they perceive themselves and also how others take them. In this model, Richard further explains that the more there is inequality in a state, the greater the stress that is caused to the citizens. This stress that is created in a person also harms on his health hence he might not be very efficient in terms of performance.
