For this assignment, write a proposal (approximately 750-1000 words) in which you describe and explain the topic you intend to write about this quarter. The purpose of this proposal is to convince your readers (and yourself) that you have a topic an audience might want to read about, that people do talk about it, and that there are promising lines of inquiry to pursue.
Your proposal should address the following aspects of your chosen topic:
Interest: Why are you interested in this topic? What is your own motivation for exploring it?
Inquiry: To what extent do you already know about this topic? What would you like to learn about this topic? What questions would you like to answer about the topic for yourself and your readers?
Scope: What does your topic entail? How might you narrow your topic to something manageable?
Conversation: To what extent are people currently talking or writing about this topic? What sources might you find? Are there credible sources discussing this topic? (It might help to do some preliminary online searches to figure this out.)
Issues: What are some debatable issues within the topic? What kinds of different opinions might reasonable people have about the topic?
Significance: Who should care about this topic? Why? What is the audience for discussions of this topic?

Computers are everywhere today which was something that seemed impossible some years ago. It has become impossible for humans to live without computers. Everyday electronic devices like ATMs, TVs, and Cars among others have computers. Computers are increasingly becoming more embedded in the everyday lives of individuals. At the same time, extensive research into computers has led to the manufacture of more accessible and intelligent devices. Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the field of computer science that is concerned with simulating human intelligence or senses. Every advancement presents both advantages and disadvantages, where the pros tend to outweigh the cons. For AI, it is not yet clear whether the long-term positive effects will keep outweighing the negative effects.
The uncertainty that lies in AI is the major reason for interest in the topic. Experts in the technology space have demonstrated that AI could be leveraged to solve some of the major challenges facing the world like climate change and diseases (Rodríguez-González & Menasalvas-Ruiz, 2019). AI appears to be a solution needed in addressing such complex and abstract challenges facing the globe. With these problems projected to increase in the future, there is a need to create technologies that can address them. Applying AI seems to be an effective way of making the world a better place. However, it is not yet clear how intelligent agents will solve some of the complex problems better than the available systems. At the same time, no legal framework exists currently to prevent the misuse of AI, hence presenting a threat to human life.
AI is a wide topic that may be confusing if it is not well broken down. As a result, the need to narrow down the scope is critical. In this case, the essay will address concerns raised regarding the application of AI. Specifically, the focus will be on the issue of dependence lock-in. There are fears that AI could eliminate decision-making on key aspects of digital life (Anderson, Rainie & Luchsinger, 2018). The worry is that AI could increase an individual’s deepening dependence on machine networks. This could eliminate the need for individuals to think for themselves and undertake actions independent of the automated systems. Others fear that such dependence could diminish the ability of people to interact freely. People may be forced to sacrifice their power of choice, as AI takes over and controls important processes.
