How the Principles of the Triple Bottom Line Mirror those of Agroecology
Agroecology involves looking at how various plants and crops interact with one another and their surroundings. The goal of agroecology is to create new agricultural ecosystems far more sustainable than the methods used now (UNFAO, 2021). Increasing production and enhancing food quality are the main goals of current agricultural operations, but this does not necessarily make them more sustainable.
Tipple bottom line has three similarities with agroecology. The first one promotes preserving the environment and addressing environmental problems. TBL framework promotes a better environment just as agroecology does. Environmental sustainability demonstrates how well a corporation supports the environment. Clear examples of how businesses enhance their local ecology is by avoiding air and water pollution (Michal, 2021). Agroecology refers to the change of agricultural techniques toward ones that are more and more resource-intensive; it intends to make farming more environmentally and resource-friendly, ultimately leading to more sustainable and economically viable farming practices. Businesses should play a crucial role in the campaign against climate change. However, short-term constraints on the bottom line often dictate how resources are allocated in many firms. Business executives should evaluate the financial advantages of decreasing their company's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and set out mechanisms to achieve the reduction. This will consequently ensure humans and animals live in better environments.
TBL and agroecology are similar in another respect since both promote the social welfare of individuals. The second TBL framework is the social or human (University of Wisconsin, 2022). A business that applies the TBL principle invests in and develops its people. Businesses should engage in activities that improve people's lives, such as reducing poverty, starting health and wellness programs, creating welfare programs for the homeless, raising living standards, and funding education. They also invest in people, the community, their workers, and the environment. According to this framework, the businesses want to influence the area and community where they are based. The social well-being of the farming community is also considered by agroecology since they are the primary beneficiaries of agribusiness. This social well-being is associated with agricultural products; it involves resolving farmer issues to maximize their potential given the resources at hand. In agroecology, the social component of agricultural systems is also addressed. Peasant or smallholder households comprise most of those with agricultural land holdings. They are the ones who need care if they are to survive. Brazil is the first nation in the world to establish an agroecological ministry to address the problem of smallholder farming families rather than only concentrating on the produce. This has been shown to be a practical method of fighting poverty without emphasizing output.
