The capability to bring innovation into the market is a critical determinant of the global competitiveness of countries in this century. There has been a growing recognition that innovation remains crucial in the economic progress of nations. Over the years, Canada has made efforts towards advancing its development agenda. In a world where technology is central, Canada stands out among the countries that have vibrant democracies and unparalleled openness towards immigrants. Yet, despite these achievements, the country faces unique challenges including the ageing population, decreasing output production and other structural problems. As a result, the nation must renew its focus on innovation.
The implementation of the “Innovation and Skills Plan” is necessary for the attainment of Canada’s innovation strategy. Announced in Budget 2017, the plan seeks to ensure Canada becomes a leading center for innovation in the world, while at the same time creating employment opportunities and growing the middle class (Government of Canada, 2019). The plan sets ambitious targets to ensure the growth of goods and service exports by 30% by 2015. Furthermore, Canada will use the proposal to increase the contribution of the clean technology sector to the GDP. While Canada has managed to come up with such a brilliant plan, the most important thing is implementation. Putting the plan into action will require strong political leadership. The relevant stakeholders will need to come together and discuss the opportunities and the costs involved in the program. Implementing the plan will enable Canada to move towards its prosperity.
