The employees at Away were always in fear of getting fired. The personal fear of employees was one of the main reasons behind them not creating secret chats. Korey never allowed the employees to email each other (Schiffer, 2019). The idea of direct messaging in Slack was ordered to be kept minimum. Due to this, the majority of the conversations at Away started taking place in public Slack channels. The main idea of Korey behind this was to create more transparency. However, as per some former employees, this, in turn, resulted in fostering a culture of fear within the organization. The CEO of Away, Korey, was notable for ripping into employees for making even small mistakes (Schiffer, 2019). Whenever employees see her typing, they knew something terrible was about to happen.
The fear and restriction were so high that the employees could not even email each other. They could rarely send direct messages in which they were not even allowed to discuss work. The employees were only allowed to make small requests on messages such as asking for lunch, which in turn, made them frustrated. Considering the private channels, they were created for specific office-related reasons only (Schiffer, 2019a). The employees had to work for a long time, and the executives used to criticize their projects on public Stack channels severely. The fear among employees was quite high, and they were reprimanded if they do not answer messages rapidly. It can simply be assumed that fear, along with frustration were the contributing factors to the employees not creating secret chats. Consequently, the policies of Away also imposed the employees to avoid direct messages.
