Currently, Rivian's HR team is mainly concerned with the administrative aspects of hiring and managing employees. However, should this proposal be accepted, the HR team will take on a strategic role to ensure Rivian capitalizes on its human resources and gain a competitive advantage. Competitive advantage will be achieved through the incorporation of HR analytics. According to Ben-Gal (2019), one way HR teams can become strategic contributors to a company's success is by integrating HR analytics into HR processes. The HR team will create a talent development and workforce planning strategy that will allow it to attract and maintain the right talent and predict the organization's long-term and short-term workforce needs. HR analytics facilitate HR's strategic role by facilitating evidence-based decision-making for global organizations looking to attract, develop, and retain the right talent (Ben-Gal, 2019). Therefore, the HR team will use HR analytics to predict the workforce needs of Rivian to support the organization in meeting its goals. Rivian’s strategic focus is on hiring the right people to create an inclusive and heterogeneous team of employees who can meet its goal of protecting the environment by manufacturing environmentally-friendly electric vehicles (Rivian, n.d.). Thus, accepting this proposal would bring Rivian closer to achieving its goal.
Talent Development and Workforce Planning
The HR team will engage in effective talent development and planning to ensure Rivian has the right workforce. It will require a focus on HR strategic planning. According to Werner (2022), HR strategic planning allows the HR team to develop and manage the organization's strategic direction. It is achieved through talent acquisition, learning and development, employee engagement and retention, and total rewards.
Talent Acquisition
Talent acquisition or staffing is an integral part of talent development. It involves recruiting and selecting the talent that meets organizational needs and goals (Werner, 2022). At Rivian, global staffing is necessary because the company wants to develop an inclusive, heterogeneous, and diverse team of employees (Rivian, n.d.). The HR team will adopt a hybrid hiring strategy from the home and host countries to attract and recruit a diverse, heterogeneous team of employees from different nationalities.
Learning and Development
Learning and development are also crucial in talent development and workforce planning. According to Werner (2022), learning and development ensure that the organization's workforce has the right skills, competencies, and knowledge to achieve organizational goals. The HR team will create training courses and development activities for employees in engineering, manufacturing, service, and retail. Rivian wants to create diversity and enhance the skills and specialties of employees in these critical areas (Rivian, n.d.). Training and development courses/ activities will be informed by current industry trends and employees/organizational needs.
