Related literature in a specific study provides a foreground of the problem and its possible result. It carries both the major and minor variables of the research which creates it more valid and concise. Providing this section also lets the readers determine the scope and limitations of the research that is why it is important. This paper will feature the critique of a literature review, together with questioning its validity towards being a reliable source.
Theories
Haugh (2012) stated that theories are boundaries of scopes and limitations of a specific concept where it is composed of various themes that are related to one another and this gives forth the importance of theories in research. The focus of this section would be the two theories; Identity Theory, and Social Identity Theory, which encompasses the problem of this study.
Identity Theory
An individual who cannot determine their identity would be a person who does not know himself well. Stets and Bruke (2000) described identity theory as a concept of relating oneself towards several areas that build one’s identity. It refers to how people address themselves on their roles, the meaning behind them, and how to perform them. Stets & Serpe (2013) supported this and explained that identity has various key concepts which are identity, verification, salience, commitment, centrality/prominence, resources, and bases of identities. This explains the wide-area range of identity theory which describes a person to be unique and different from others. Concerning the study about diversity, this theory supports the idea that people are different from one another. When Ledimo (2015) stated, “Individuals differ from each other in some way or the other”, which implies that people have their unique identities which separate and differentiate them from other people. Also, when she presented the primary and secondary dimensions of individuals differences reflects the idea of identity theory.
Social Identity Theory
On the other hand, if identity theory refers to the concept of one’s self in a wide variety of areas, social identity theory refers to the self of a person being categorized or grouped. This theory refers to how a person can be said to be under the same organization or group due to the similarities given to them. To be exact, this theory emphasizes how one’s self is considered to be in or out of a specific class. This often happens where a group of people who have the same physiological and psychological factors tend to come together as one (Stets & Burke, 2000). In this case, this refers to the effects of differences in an organizational environment where people are forming groups where the people considered to be part of it have the same interest...
