Prior Learning Assessment
I learned how to take care of patients because of my upbringing. My life has been challenging than many individuals I know. I grew up in a community setting with inadequate medical facilities and practitioners. I was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, in a neighborhood with poor medical facilities. We had only two medical professionals and one hospital in the neighborhood. This was not enough given the relatively growing population. It was common to wait for a long time before being attended because of many patients on the line. I kept asking myself what would happen if many patients needed emergency services. Working has allowed me to attend to patients and families who had lost hope. I have inspired patients and their families to keep on fighting on, despite the difficult circumstances. Sometimes patients are hopeless, which adversely affects their recovery. I have learned the importance of giving hope to patients and their families in challenging situations. I have witnessed some of the patients recover and be discharged.
The knowledge I have gained in the course has ensured integrity, empathy, and responsibility in the workplace. I have ensured integrity by being true to my beliefs. For instance, I believe in providing accurate information to my patients. When the physician is running behind, I let my patient know that the physician will be late and join them soon. I have ensured open and honest communication with my patients. I have demonstrated empathy while providing care to my patients. We learned in the course that nurses need to put themselves in the shoes of their clients. Si...
