Human resources are important in any organizational setting as they are vital in achieving the organization’s bottom line. As such, human resource (HR) professionals have to create ways in which they can align the employees’ goals with the organization’s goals. Further, the HR professionals have to ensure that they have a skilled and capable workforce that will meet the organization’s objectives. This is where training and development becomes an essential part of human resource management, and as such, it is paramount that HR professional adopts learning techniques that will enhance training and development.
Case-Based Decision Making
This involves reviewing past decisions made regarding a certain situation and using the same approaches to solve a similar, present situation. In case-based decision making, decision-makers believe that problems that are the same can be solved using similar solutions (Kajan, Dorloff, & Bedini, 2012). Through a case-based reasoning model, organizations are able to solve current problems by utilizing a solution that was used to solve past problems, successfully. For instance, organizations can use prior training methods that were able to fill a certain gap in skills and competencies, to fill a current training need. This can be effective, especially when a company is using the traditional training approach where training is provided based on employee general rather than specific competency needs. As such, a case-based decision can be made to use prior training techniques to fill current training needs.
Systems Thinking
System thinking is an approach that allows leaders to look at organizations from a system perspective whereby each part of the system interacts with the other. Similarly, the effectiveness of one part of the system also affects the effectiveness of the entire system. Once HR practitioners become system thinkers, they understand that employees’ training affects other departments in the organization as well.
Competency Models
A competency model is a framework that is used in defining the requirements of a job role and assessing the competencies of the human resources, regarding skill and knowledge required by the organization (Kandula, 2013).
The competency-based training approach ensures that employees are trained based on their competency development needs (Kandula, 2013). As such, the training is more effective, and employees are also compensated based on their skills. A competency-based approach is more effective than a traditional approach, which focuses on the training needs based on the position of the employee, and on the general training needs (Kandula, 2013).
