The more the differences within the organization, the more diverse it becomes. Lack of diversity in a firm can create a hostile environment and contribute to high turnover. A diverse organization includes people of different races, gender, nationalities, religion, abilities, and socioeconomic statuses. Creating such a workplace requires improving the hiring and recruiting practices in the company's culture. Retaining diverse employees also requires an organizational culture that is inclusive and nonjudgmental.
Historical Context That Frames Opportunities and Challenges in Organizational Diversity
Workplace diversity programs emerged in the mid-1960s when affirmative action of equal employment laws was introduced. The popular diverse action adopted by the management entailed outlining a list of dos and don'ts and using hiring tests. The positive effect of diversity programs was short-lived. The biased-focused training had little impact on the dominant white males, who perceived it as overly controlling. This resulted in some employees rebelling against the programs and managers hiring whomever they wanted. Today, some companies have invested in diverse training programs through talent recruitment, data and metrics transparency, and executive leadership positions (Roberson, 2019).
Opportunities for Workplace Diversity
Several befits accompany organizational diversity, including increased innovation, enhanced productivity, and improved company culture (Chaudhry et al.., 2021). Building a diverse workforce within an organization boosts access to a larger talent pool. As the labor force becomes more diverse, the firm gains a competitive advantage in the marketplace and enhances employee satisfaction. Additionally, there are several opportunities that the company may achieve when pursuing strategies that value diversity. Some comprise improved marketing ability, organizational flexibility, and reduced employee turnover.
