Researchers currently estimate the annual nitrogen oxide pollutant production at between two and four million tons of oxide internationally. With an instant rise in population growth, and the resulting demand for more food-making, both the agricultural soils regions and the intensity of their utilization will continue increasing steadily in the forthcoming years. Using synthetic fertilizers is one of the widespread direct nitrogen oxide sources. The extensive rise in using such nitrogen-based fertilizers has been majorly triggered by the necessity for increased crop harvests and more intensive farming exercises (Thurston, 2017).
Nitrogen oxide is a colorless gas with a slight odor. The oxide leads to the pollution challenge wherever it is introduced or released. Nitrogen oxide gets released into the earth’s surface through human-induced and natural sources (Huang et al., 2021). Introducing and transferring the pollutant throughout the environment happens in different ways. For example, substantial nitrogen oxide amounts might be generated and emitted into the environment where huge applications of nitrogen-based fertilizers are blended with soil conditions favoring denitrification. Likewise, regular, extensive, and regulated animal waste used as fertilizer can produce considerable nitrous oxide emissions from agricultural soils.
