The main reason why people work as a team is because they have a common purpose. Individuals believe that working as a team helps them achieve more. Such notion of shared purpose or shared vision is the defining element of a team (Venus, Stam & Van Knippenberg, 2013). To achieve the vision, mission and goals, people need to work together as a team. Having a vision means being able to excite the team on the expected outcome. However, trust is important whereby leaders commit to the vision and promotes shared values. Trust can be achieved by addressing any questions, doubts and fear expressed by members. Commitment is an important aspect of trust, each and every team member needs to be committed to enabling other members achieve the shared vision by overcoming some of the obstacles (Venus, Stam & Van Knippenberg, 2013).
Similar Carton, Murphy, & Clark (2014), states that one of the key responsibilities of leaders is to communicate the organization values, vision to help people understand the purpose of what they are doing. The article believes that having a shared sense of purpose have been overlooked but has profound effects. According to the authors, vision combined with values boost performance because it triggers a shared sense of purpose hence promoting team work. The article presents Martin Luther King Jr’s example to show how million of people had a common purpose whereby he delivered the most influential speech. Martin Luther’s speech presents a vision of the future laced with images that attracted many of his followers (Carton, Murphy & Clark, 2014).
