Q1.
Torben Emmerling and Duncan Rooders’ article, “7 Strategies for Better Group Decision-Making,” observes that sometimes group decisions can be the only solutions to a problem (Emmerling & Rooders, 2020, pp. 1). However, working with several people can lead to various challenges such as expert opinions distorting a group’s decisions and individual biases coming across. Nevertheless, these strategies can help a group effectively make decisions.
One of the strategies is keeping the group small. A big group is likely to make biased decisions consistent with existing information and practices as each individual will conduct individual research, and failure to agree on the results causes them to settle for pre-existing data. However, a small group of people between three to five people is the most ideal. Group decisions made by them are founded on one-on-one interactions that develop precise and informed decisions (Emmerling & Rooders, 2020, pp.2).
Selecting a heterogeneous group over a homogenous one in most cases is preferable. Groups with individuals who share similar opinions and beliefs, such as homogenous groups, tend to make biased decisions. However, when the tasks are repetitive, they are the best. However, a heterogeneous group is likely to have divergent opinions that challenge existing biases, making independent and informed decisions, especially in tasks requiring varied skill sets.
Having one or two strategic dissenters can promote decision-making by groups. Group thinking is detrimental to effective decision-making by a group. However, having one or two voices that offer contrary opinions is essential as they challenge a team’s decision-making process, making it independent, thus producing quality outcomes (Emmerling & Rooders, 2020, pp. 3). Depending on the number of group members, select more dissenters to avoid isolation if it is one individual. Collecting opinions one by one can be another way of promoting group decisions. When people share their views individually, they are more likely to offer their true thoughts than in a group. Thus, encourage all individuals to record their opinions and let the group discuss all the different ideas without identifying the author. Consequently, this counters group thinking, hidden agendas, and control by senior members are eliminated, leading to significant decisions.
Offering a safe space for people to voice their ideas goes a long way in promoting group decisions. For people to share their insights and engage in constructive discussions, they need a space to speak up without the fear of reprisal. Creating a safe space that focuses on the ideas instead of the person, which focuses on feedback instead of commands and shows appreciation for the feedback, helps group members freely offer their opinions, reser...
