Background
These questions are meant for you to showcase what you’ve learned. They are designed to test your critical thinking – to take things we’ve learned in class and the book and have you apply it to a slightly different context. You should use knowledge learned from the book and in class, and then think critically about the situation to formulate a logical answer.
This work should represent individual efforts. It is open book but conferring with other students in any way is cheating. Each question is equally weighted so each question is worth 25% of your grade. Please bold key terms when you use them.

1. In the book, we learned why freeriding occurs in teams in general. Compare and contrast why freeriding occurs in teams in general with why you think freeriding occurs in student teams. Provide examples when you or others were freeriders on student teams. What are realistic things that could have been done to avoid it (or at least to minimize it) and how can you use that knowledge when designing your next student team in order to get a heightened level of effort out of everyone (including yourself)?
2. Evaluate goals that your team has set. Which ones are effective and which ones are not effective (and be sure to indicate how you’re measuring effectiveness)? Why is that the case? Relate it back to what we’ve learned about effective goals. If your team hasn’t established goals, explain how your team is able to be effective without effective goals.
3. In what ways can diversity be both harmful and helpful to a student team?

Free riding is perhaps one of the most common problems within organizations. This phenomenon happens when one or more members become overly dependent upon the efforts of others and merely rely on getting a share of the credit for the job done. It is a fact that different factors are causing freeriding among organizations. Although there are many reasons for free riding in either these groups, I believe that one of the most common reasons is the organization's reliance on 'pooled interdependence.'
When it comes to the type of interdependence, both student and professional organizations could suffer from each of the three types depending on the task involved. For example, student organizations might experience freeriding in tasks that use pooled interdependence. Imagine a scenario where a student group divides the task of writing a paper in groups of four, whereas only one of the members would write their group's section. This delegation strategy would cause freeriding because the other members are merely expected to provide their insights without being assigned a specific task. Professional organizations that divide their tasks per department and where every department relies on the pooled knowledge of its members are bound to suffer from freeriding. Imagine a strategy-making group tasked to devise a marketing strategy using collective brainstorming. There is a high chance that some members would freeride since there are no specific tasks that they are assigned to do.
In order to address the problem of freeriding, it would be best to establish specific metrics or roles that each member would do. This strategy could apply either for students or professional organizations. One example of these metrics is the use of a 'peer performance evaluation sheet' that has predetermined metrics that each member would fill-up. Another example of this strategy is the utilization of transparent and efficient distribution of tasks, regardless of what type of interdependence the organization uses.
Finally, I would use both peer evaluation and task allocation for our next student activity. Peer evaluations would ensure that each member exerts a heightened effort in contributing instead to the overall output, thereby reducing the risks of freeriding among members.

The main goal that my team has set is to be able to get high scores with the help of different sub-goals such as (1) effective task delegation, (2) clear and open communication, and (3) proper time management. Accordingly, I find all of these three sub-goals to be very effective in helping us reach our primary goal.
First, we believe that task delegation is useful in helping us reach our main goal because it allows us to be able to work simultaneously together while leveraging our strengths and weaknesses. We based this strategy on the idea of self-verification, whereby we provided an avenue for each of us to reinforce their ideas and personal views.
