An organization’s staff selection procedure determines the quality of new employees and can affect daily operations and overall success. Selection increases the likelihood of hiring the right candidate and the chances of being with a company for a long period (Nieves & Quintana, 2018). There are numerous costs associated with an employer being responsive to an applicant’s perspective during selection. An employer's aim in the selection process is to get a candidate who can perform tasks diligently and perfectly fit into the organization's culture. However, in most cases, an applicant’s point of view portrays an attractive image to the potential employer. Therefore, considering the applicant’s perspective could mislead the employer into hiring and ending up with the wrong candidate. Also, it is not unusual for an applicant to overpromise or oversell their qualifications and abilities (Rozario et al., 2019). As a result, an employer may be willing to give such an applicant the position, diluting the organization's culture.
However, considering an applicant’s perspective has advantages. The employer can gather important information about the applicant, enabling them to make a reasonable offer (McCarthy et al., 2017). Notably, considering the interviewee's perspective ensures that the interview is conducted in the best way possible and the outcome is beneficial to both parties. More so, it is during this interaction where an interviewer gets ideas from the applicants. These ideas could be utilized to better the culture and overall operation of the organization. Additionally, it acts as an opportunity to clarify any underlying misconception that a prospective employee has regarding the organization. Finally, it helps to appraise the true level of the candidate's interest in the position. The interviewer can ascertain whether the candidate's interests go beyond mere employment and money.
