PROJECT

  • For this project your team are the executive managers and overseers of a (sports) event. Plan (or describe, if you are

analyzing an completed project) the event from beginning to end, at a regional, national or international level.

  • Once you have a clear picture of the event you are planning/describing, concentrate on areas you consider would be imperative to the success of the project. Students interested on the finances, hospitality, accounting, marketing, advertisment or management of the event can concentrate in that partciular aspect within the bigger picture.
  • Example – organizing the Olympic Games
    • Host country specifics
    • Role of the NOC responsible for the event: supervision, support and monitoring the organisation of the Games; making sure that events run smoothly, safely, and making sure that the rules of the Olympic Charter are respected.
    • Role and responsibility of the CEO?
      • Include areas that need to be supervised, developed
      • Who needs to be involved
      • Who makes what decisions
      • Areas that need to be covered
      • Identify potential costs (review the literature on this subject)
      • Example: https://tokyo2020.org/en/

Considerations for organizers:

  • Management - Number of participants at all levels not only athletes

(Human power: Employment, personnel, visitors, athletes, officials, managers, assistant managers, venue managers, workers, volunteers, set- up and clean up crews, hiring process, housing opportunities for international athletes, dignataries, security precautions, religious venues availability, etc.)

  • Expenses that should be included – venues, personnel, officials, paid workers, etc.
  • Considerations for the wellbeing of those working, participating, officiating, volunteering, visiting, dignataries, media personnel, etc.
  • Marketing, advertising, sponsors, contracts
  • Media credentials and security
  • Tickets
  • IT workers, screens, computers, logistics
  • Equipment needed
  • Hospitality at all different levels to consider – include issues and differences of culture
  • Risks and Security
  • Transportation
  • Concerns for the environment
  • Natural disasters
  • Entertainment, Opening and Closing ceremonies
  • Identify legal, ethical, or potential risks
  • Medical crew at all levels
  • Drug testing
  • Awards ceremonies

Initiation and Definition
The FIFA World Cup preparation will require extensive identification of the number of stadiums necessary for the great event. Saudi Arabia stadiums have the highest average age of stadiums than similar peer countries wishing to host such events. However, some of the existing stadiums need reconstruction and renovation to uphold the intended event standards. Hence, we propose 11 stadiums in the three host cities (Riyadh, Dammam, Jeddah). Notably, three of the chosen stadiums will need significant reconstruction and renovation. The exercise is intended to cut off the unnecessary cost in the budget, such as constructing new stadiums.
Transport and accommodation are some of the significant challenges that could impede the implementation of the project.
