Organizational development assists an organization to establish their capacity to change and also achieve efficiencies by improving and reinforcing strategies and processes. It is an evidence based practice and also a structured process. It also aims at organizational effectiveness. Organizational Development (OD) cuts across different fields such as industrial, business, human resource, management, and many others. Therefore, there are different definitions of OD depending on the field that it is applied. However, OD can be defined as an objective-based method that is used to bring changes to a system in an entity (Wirtz et al., 2016). The origin of the OD is associated with the post-war responses to the harsh scientific management approaches. Under OG, work was Brocken into small pieces that were closely monitored through time and motion studies (McLean, 2005). In case any dissent issues were noted among employees, they would easily be dismissed because they had no autonomy in the system. Organization development does differ in different organizations. For example there organizations which are concerned with engagement of employees, satisfaction of customers, and the increased capacity of the employees to adapt to new pages. However, the humanistic approach of OD began to replace the craftsmanship in organizations with a more natural and behavioral approach. Today, the OD is associated with change. Therefore, its primary focus is on research, data collection, analysis, action, and evaluation as opposed to the early OD, which was firmly rooted in the experimental tradition.

Furthermore, the work OD is to improve efficiency, which is associated with many benefits. Firstly, OD emphasizes effective communication among employees, which fosters their growth. The OD will also enhance the skills of their employees, which will improve their attitude at work. Secondly, organizations that use OD tend to have increased horizontal and vertical communication. Effective communication aligns employees with mutual goals and objectives (McLean, 2005). It is through open discussion that these employees will understand the need for change in the organization. Thirdly, organizations that involve and participate in the OD will ultimately improve their business models. Organizational development also promotes competition in an organization. When an organization is competitive it can be able to compete with other firms in the market. An organization can also innovate different products with the assistance of organizational development. The OD tends to create a continuous pattern of growth whereby all strategies in an organization are tested, developed, implemented, and finally assessed (McLean, 2005). Eventually, increased innovation and effective productivity will lead to increased profit margins.
