Factors Influencing Job Satisfaction
Job satisfaction is a significant factor that helps organizations gain a competitive advantage because of the central role played by employees in organizational success. Employee job satisfaction the profound impact satisfaction has on their performance and productivity. A high level of job satisfaction is usually accompanied by exceptional employee performance and increased productivity. According to Pawirosumarto et al. (2017), organizational culture, behavior, leadership style, and work environment determine job satisfaction and employee performance. Therefore, organizations need to focus on factors that ensure that their employees stay motivated to increase job satisfaction and consequently their performance and productivity. The major differences between my worst and best job resulted primarily from the various leadership approaches adopted by the two organizations I worked for, working conditions, and organization culture.
My first job at a local store is my worst workplace because of the firm's prevailing leadership style and organizational culture. Leadership style and organizational culture are closely related to employee motivation and performance. Leadership style refers to leaders' methods to influence their employees' behaviors (Pawirosumarto et al., 2017). The leadership style influences organizational culture, which entails the values and symbols embraced by members of an organization. The store manager adopted a transactional leadership style that primarily focuses on the exchanges between him and the employees. The manager lacked listening skills, and most of the employees' complaints were left unattended. The transactional leadership style focused on results and the number of sales made per day but not on employee's well-being. The store also had an unsupportive culture characterized by a lack of communication. The employees were always under stress because they did not know how the manager would behave when he comes to the store.
Poor organizational culture and leadership approach at the store can negatively influence employee behavior and working conditions. Most employees were defensive and, in most cases, utilized reactive communication strategies. Additionally, they were unmotivated and unwilling to take responsibility because of the poor leadership style adopted by the store manager. Previous studies reveal that working conditions and physical environment is correlated with employee performance and job satisfaction (Díaz-Carrión et al., 2020). I quit my job at the store because it had a poor working environment. The firm's corporate culture did not allow employees to form meaningful relationships and interact with each other effectively. Besides, the physical working condition was unfavorable for employees, especially individuals working at the extremely cold warehouse without any special protective gear.
