A leader of a fundraising organization at a cancer hospital has hired you to consult. There are 35 employees working in this hospital team organizing special events and soliciting financial contributions from donors. The money this team raises goes directly to fund a pediatric cancer research project.

Since early March, the covid-19 pandemic has interrupted business operations and all team members are now required to work remotely instead of going to their office. None of these team members have ever worked from home before.

The leader is looking to you to provide recommendations for the following issues:

  1. Identify and explain 4-5 specific norms of behavior the leader should expect from the team members as they shift to remote working.

 

  1. Using Tuckman’s Five Stage Model, provide examples of specific behaviors the team members could demonstrate at each stage as they work together remotely.    

 

 

  1. Suggest actions the leader could take to influence the team in becoming an empowered and self-managed team while working remotely.

* Why is change difficult for people to embrace?
Change in business is risking. People find it difficult to accept change as they fear losses and wasting time meant for achieving profits to uncertainties. If change bears no fruits, it means a waste of time and resources (Bridges, 2019). Lack of employee involvement in turn causes resistance.
* What do you think will happen to the U.S. culture as a result of the disruptive changes caused by the covid-19 pandemic?
The U.S food chains and supplies will change after the COVID-19 epidemic due to the irregular purchase patterns (Tepepa, 2020). The price hike while purchasing food items remains worrying about their culture. Most sales will not be constant as people will be working to survive and regain their business grounds.
Question 2 (25 points)
* Why is it the leader’s responsibility to make followers feel safe inside an organization?
A leader should make followers feel safe to maintain order in the organization. When employees feel safe, they yield better results (Heifetz & Linsky, 2017). Change seems more natural when leaders can be trusted with the safety of their employees.
* What specific actions can a leader take to inspire their followers? How will a leader know if their followers are inspired?
A leader should lead by example and work together with his followers. He should appreciate them when they achieve great results and share the profits earned. He should listen, communicate effectively with his followers, and ensure work in a conducive environment. Inspired followers are confident, transparent, and honest with their leaders, and they work harder.
* How do followers know if they can trust their leader?
The leader should be approachable, concerned about the welfare of his followers, and trust their work (Gulati, 2018). He should fulfill his promises and help solve conflicts. Must also provide an enabling environment for discussions between them and the subordinate staff.

* Identify and explain 4-5 specific norms of behavior the leader should expect from the team members as they shift to remote working.
* Distractions that lead to less concentration and less performance.
* Loneliness results if the members do not connect with the rest of the team, making them feel left out in the team activities.
* Difficulty in accessing information, and the members must adapt to the reduced possibility to quickly meet up and discuss as before.
* Reduced supervision and direct support by the team leaders would be another expectation. The members feel that their needs would not be addressed adequately.
* Using Tuckman’s Five Stage Model, provide examples of specific behaviors the team members could demonstrate at each stage as they work together remotely.
