Effective Approaches to Data Warehouse Implementation
Introduction
Data warehouse (DW) refers to a system that is used in reporting and analyzing data. It is considered one of the core components of business intelligence. Data from various operational systems is uploaded to the data warehouse, from where it is used in the creation of worker’s analytical reports within the organization (Vaisman & Zimanyi, 2014). Some of the benefits of SW in an organization include integration of data from multiple sources, maintenance of data history, improvement of the quality of data, consistent presentation of the organization’s information, among others (Wang, Kung, & Byrd, 2018). However, for an organization to enjoy these benefits, DW must be effectively implemented. This paper seeks to identify the various approaches that an organization can employ in the effective implementation of DW.
While coming up with a data warehouse, caution must be taken to reduce the risks associated with the process and maximize the likelihood of the DW solution meeting the needs of the end users. All the stages of DW development must be considered (Nabli, Bouaziz, Yangui, & Gargouri, 2015). The approaches to be employed in the effective implementation of DW can be divided into three categories DW modeling, DW lifecycle, and others (Ambysoft Inc., 2018).
DW Modelling
This is the initial stage of the development of DW and majorly involves the setting up of the DW architecture. An organization must come up with a vision and model of the DW they want to develop. All the aspects of the architecture must also be proven early in the project to ensure the ultimate success of the project. This means that an organization must transfer the model from PowerPoint slides and prove it using code. The great focus must also be directed to the usage of the DW. Though data is of great importance to an organization, it will be of no use if it cannot be used by the targeted end users. In other terms, the DW must employ a usage-centered approach rather than a data-centered approach. The various stakeholders must also be actively involved in the entire project even in circumstances where they will not be involved with the project on a daily basis (Storey & Song, 2017).
DW Lifecycle
An evolutionary approach is the most preferred at this stage. The understanding and requirements of the DW keep changing throughout its life. Moreover, the needs of the stakeholders, as well as the end users, keep changing. To be able to offer the solutions that the DW is designed for, an evolutionary approach must be employed. The ability of an organization to embrace change is a big advantage in the implementation of DW. The change management strategy must also be extended to the stakeholders to ensure that they easily and swiftly respond to change (Jaber, Ghani, Suryana, Mohammed, & Abbas,...
