The workplace in various parts around the world has undergone significant transformations as a result of globalization. Companies particularly in the US are characterized by individuals from different ethnicities, gender, age, and religion. Stringent employment laws that challenge discrimination have also seen more disabled people in the workforce. One notable organization that has embraced diversity in its workforce in the US is Walmart. The retail giant is a huge believer and a strong advocate in equipping associates, communities and customers that it serves to lead better lives. In this regard, Walmart not only understands and respects but also values multiple forms of diversity.
The first form of diversity that is evident at Walmart entails the employing of women. For centuries, women have been sidelined and discriminated in society. Many corporates tend to shy away from hiring women because they consider them as being weak and will be costly considering the number of leave days they will take for matters such as maternity. While this is the norm for some organizations, Walmart gives women opportunities to serve within the organization. It is estimated that more than 60% of the US workers are women (Pellecchia, 2019). Moreover, a significant number of women are in managerial and supervisory roles. Secondly, Walmart also has an ethnically-diverse workforce spread across its many outlets within and outside the US. Statistics indicate that more than 20% of the US workforce comprises of African American while about 14% are Hispanics (Pellecchia, 2019). These are very high statistics considering the rampant racial inequality and white privilege in the region. It is also essential to note that 31% of the managers at the retail giant are persons of color (Walmart.com, 2020).
