Project closure is an important phase of projects. According to Meredith et al. (2018), project closure allows the project manager to review the project to establish whether it meets the deliverables. It allows the project manager and team to finalize the project by tying up loose ends and discussing the lessons learned in the course of completing the project. The Human Resource Information System (HRIS) integration cases study had several challenges, but eventually, the team was able to integrate the European and American systems, albeit with several issues that needed to be fixed after the system went live (Bartlett & Bartlett, 2008). As a result, it can be termed as a normal project that goes to completion, even with the many challenges such as being over-budget and late.
The type of closure that would help this project is closure by addition. According to Meredith et al. (2018), closure by addition involves institutionalizing the project as a formal part of the organization and is common for in-house projects that have achieved their objectives. This project can be closed by making it a division of the global HR department. Closure by addition is suitable when the project outcome is meant to be used by the organization. In the HRIS case study, the HRIS integration project is meant to be used in-house by the organization as an HRIS system for both European and American employees. Closure by addition will make this project part of the organization and will be very useful for future HR integration activities. For instance, the organization is already planning to integrate the HR portion of 88 countries into the American system (Bartlett & Bartlett, 2008).
