California’s Safe Injection Sites
The Senate Bill (SB) 57, which Senator Scott Wiener introduced was passed by the California State legislature. The policy authorizes Los Angeles, Oakland, and San Francisco to approve safe injection sites also known as overdose prevention programs. California loses many people due to drug overdose every day. For instance, in 2021, an average of 18 individuals died daily from an opioid overdose. As such, the state lost about 6,843 in 2021 (Chabria, 2022). In particular, criminalizing drug addiction has contributed to the incarceration of many people in California, especially between the ages of twenty and twenty-nine.
Gavin Newsom, California’s Governor, reiterated that the state needs effective solutions to end the drug overdose menace that has led to the death of numerous individuals regardless of the number of people incarcerated (Hall, 2022). Rational choice is one of the theories of politics evident throughout the policy-making process. Monitored drug consumption sites will save the lives of many Californians, who might be triggered to change their behavior for the better rather than leaving them to die unsupervised (California State Senate Democratic Caucus, 2022). Crackdowns on drug addicts have proved to be an ineffective policy for an extended period. As such, approaching the problem differently might help to combat it and save many lives.
