Subject: Workplace Bullying
Due to the growing number of workplace bullying cases in the United States, the management would like to clarify that the firm does not and will not tolerate such behavior among its employees. The consequences of workplace bullying have to be taken seriously since they can depict the company in a bad light and cause hefty legal fines and penalties. The management would like all workers to consider the case of Michael Mercieca of Microsoft to understand what is considered workplace bullying and its consequences.
Microsoft created a hostile work environment for Michael after falling out with a co-worker with whom he had an intimate relationship and later became Michael’s boss. The nature of workplace bullying comprised such incidents as false charges of sexual abuse and workers conspiring against Michael (Solow, 2014). His eventual firing caused him to sue the company for damages. Despite being the company’s best salesman, the workplace bullying faced by Michael resulted in racial and sexual abuses by individuals in a position of power. In the United States, data shows that most bullies are bosses, as manifested in 72% of bullying cases. Additionally, most bullies are men (60%), and women are often the main targets (57%) (Wiedmer, 2011). However, Michael’s case comprises a woman bullying a man, which illustrates that anyone can become a target by a rogue boss trying to exercise power and control over subordinates.
Mitigation and Prevention
Addressing, mitigating, and preventing workplace bullying will begin by implementing a policy against such behavior. The management acknowledges that the company has a culture that binds everyone and must be obeyed. The policy will allow all individuals to report bullying cases and for actions to be taken against anyone involved in the practice. The policy is built on the virtue that all company workers are important for our growth and success and that each enjoys fundamental human rights. At the same time, the human resource management (HRM) will build a tribunal for investigating and addressing bullying cases as part of the corporate conflict resolution strategy and practices. Lastly, a training program for all organizational members will be established to allow everyone to familiarize themselves with the policy and other issues about workplace bullying.
Training Program
The training program will utilize four relevant points to address the negative effects of bullying in the workplace. The first point defines and describes workplace bullying. This point will seek to clarify all behavior that can be perceived as bullying and behaviors that do not qualify. For example, reprimanding an employee for lateness and bad conduct cannot be considered bullying, while demeaning a staff member due to personal reasons and interests can be considered bullying. The second point involves outlining the consequences of workplace bullying. The training program will use current data and case studies to highlight how employees suffer after bein...
