Explain big five personality traits. What its impact on employees’ behavior in an organization.

The big five personality traits are – extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to experience.

1. Extraversion – People having this personality trait are highly social, have strong social skills and are also extremely warm and friendly. People with this personality trait enjoy interacting with people, are talkative, are attentive and do not like spending time alone.

2. Agreeableness - People having this personality trait are polite and compassionate. The hallmark of this personality trait is good heartedness, being cooperative and being trustworthy. People with this personality trait also have a high degree of empathy.

3. Conscientiousness - People having this personality trait are self-disciplined and dutiful. Such a person goes about performing his day to day task in a disciplined manner. Besides people with this personality trait are responsible, well organized and they plan well so that their goals are achieved in an optimal manner.

4. Neuroticism – People who have high degree of neuroticism tend to be emotionally unstable. These people get upset over little and inconsequential matters easily. Their mood is largely negative and they face issues like anger and anxiety.

5. Openness to experience - People having this personality trait are open minded and are receptive to new ideas and thoughts. They like to experience new things and adventures and are comfortable to move out of their comfort zone. They do not like to hold on to a monotonous routine.

The big five personality dimension that has the biggest influence on job performance is conscientiousness. Those who score higher in this trait are likely to have higher levels of job-related knowledge as those who are highly conscientious learn more. They’re likely to have the aspects of a strong leader. However, they’re also more likely to put work first over anything else and aren’t as likely to adapt to changing situations. They may face issues over learning a complex skill early on because they tend to focus on their performance instead of the learning process, and they are generally not as creative.
