Key priorities
Amazon announced the search of their second headquarter (HQ2) location and attracted many good offers from different states. In their quest for a new location, the company outlined key priority areas that they would use as an evaluation criterion for the new site. Top on the priorities was access to talent. The company is interested in locations that provide a vast pool of talented workers to join the company’s workforce. Another priority item was access to rich transport infrastructure. The new location should be accessible by air, water, or land without causing congestion. Thus, airports, railway stations, roads, and water transport are the key infrastructure needed. The company has big infrastructural ambitions that include office space and residential buildings. Therefore, Amazon is also interested in areas where they are perceived to have more space for growth. As a result, land available should be vast to allow for future expansion.
Implementation
Amazon is focused on having locations that provide decent housing at affordable prices so as to avoid the housing problem facing them in Seattle. Moreover, Amazon is interested in areas that offer financial incentives. Here, financial incentives include property taxes, relocation incentives, and any tax reliefs. Getting a moderately populated location is also Amazon’s priority. A target population of above one million is ideal for them. Amazon does not want to occupy a deserted place.
