The essay on “Zero Energy Solution: Inside the Solar-Hydrogen House” is an argumentative essay that compares and contrasts the advantages and disadvantages of the use of a solar-hydrogen system, which has been utilized by Mike Strizki to power his home (Biello, 2008). It first depicts what a solar-hydrogen powered home is then followed by explaining the global need for it, thereby making the tone of the essay condescending.
The author, however, did not include the references used to prove that the data presented were valid and updated. Furthermore, the figures shown have no bases from the statistics in the country as well as peer-reviewed articles. It appears to be describing the solar-hydrogen system from pure speculations. Thus, appearing to be biased. However, the author mentioned direct quotations from Mr. Strizki, which may be relatively reliable.
The author used a compare and contrast pattern of the organization, as seen in the way he presented the pieces of evidence, first with the advantages, then followed by comparing it to its disadvantages. Also, the author gave the two schools of thought unbiased since the author equally presented both, even when the figures and statistics utilized by the client are biased.
Overall, the essay fulfilled its objectives by presenting the pros and cons of this system. This will help the audience decide on whether it is beneficial for them to avail and to install this kind of system. However, the arguments presented are relatively weak since they are only based on presumptions and not based on facts and evidence by research. The use of factual evidence with in-text citations is crucial in argumentative essays. Presumptions weaken the arguments, primarily when authors only utilize the interviewee’s opinions. And, without credibility, an information becomes a presumption.
