Dante’s Inferno teaches about good and evil and illustrates that evil has to be punished and good has to be rewarded. Through the nine circles of hell, Dante provides a connection between sin and punishment. Sinners go through punishment in hell and Dante believes that in such cases, justice is fairly served. Different sins are matched to different punishment where the first circle, referred to as Limbo, serves the least severe punishment, and the ninth circle, treachery, serves the most severe punishment. Souls that were punished in Limbo were not sinners because they had led virtuous lives but had not been baptized and as such, were non-believers.
