Psychology and philosophy merged and weaved into words define what Crime and Punishment of Fyodor Dostoyevsky is. It is a well-known novel for its successful study of the psychopathology of guilt among others representing Dostoyevsky’s stance that when someone commits a crime, a guilty conscience causes more torment and anguish than physical punishment. In this book, Fyodor brilliantly described and explored the feelings of guilt and how it affected people differently.
The author delivered the story through a third person's point of view and depicted a world where the struggle of people comes from the oppression of those who are in power. The protagonist, Rodion Raskolnikov, is a man who grew up in poverty, full of idealism and moral utilitarianism. In the first half of the novel, the tone of the story focuses on Raskolnikov’s anger and revenge about his disposition in life, how those who are affluent took advantage of their situation. At that time, the only option laid in front of him to pull himself up from the dirt was killing the old pawnbroker who does nothing for others and only profits for herself. He took the responsibility of murdering two women, for ending their lives will benefit the rest. A sound argument on why killing was acceptable despite being lawfully wrong because, for Rodion, the end justifies the means. His crime was solely focused on the result and for the greater good of many, therefore in his mind, his actions were justified by his beliefs. His conscience remained at rest (Dostoevsky, Pevear, & Volokhonsky, 1992). We can see that in the following lines:
Why does my action strike them as so horrible?’ he said to himself. ‘Is it because it was a crime? What is meant by crime? My conscience is at rest. Of course, it was a legal crime, of course, the letter of the law was broken and blood was shed. Well, punish me for the letter of the law … and that’s enough.
