What is "gender-based violence, and why is it not merely "violence?"
Gender-based violence is a widely debated phenomenon. What is gender-based violence (GBV)? Gender-based violence is a broad theme involving various violations such as physical, sexual, mental, or economic harm inflicted on an individual arising from existing power disparities or imbalance between men and women. The Council of Europe defines GBV as any violence, entailing relations of power featuring a feeling of superiority, accompanied by an intention to assert such supremacy. GBV assumes diverse forms of violations that involve intimate partner violence, sexual violence, rape, and exploitation (Lumen Learning). GBV is not merely violence because it is associated with harm, assault, and oppression, meted on individuals along with gender power disparities.
GBV is primarily aggression towards women? Is adding violence against men and transgender people considered GBV, or is it a different phenomenon?
Most victims of GBV are women because the existing power imbalance and socio-economic and political disparities tend to favor men. Men are also victims of GBV. Men are not spared from the wave of gender violence, but GBV against men maybe often underreported; thereby, it could be more common than anticipated. Statistically, cases involving are much less in comparison with women, but such cases shouldn’t be ignored (Council of Europe).
The violence against transgender people could be considered GBV because such violence is based on gender identities and roles. GBV definition applies to the violence meted against a person, which may not only be based on binary options of gender such as male and female, but more spectrums of sexuality variations, sexual orientations, and gender identities, and neither explicit male nor female identities. Thus, LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) and others who do not fall within conventional heterosexual binaries can also be victims of GBV arising from real or perceived gender identity or sexual orientation.
