We live in a highly gendered society. Our roles, expectations, attitudes, behaviors, and practices are often shaped along gender lines. The first impression that people would make of someone is whether such the person is female, male, or bisexual, among other gender identities. The gendered world is having a remarkable sense of gender fluidity, where gender debates are never-ending. The robustly entrenched association norms, gender perceptions and institutionalization of gender, and emerging spectrum of gender identities and sexual liberalism have created a vicious clash.
Section One: My Gendered Story
It is critical to understand the frequent terms that revolve around the notion of gender. Most sociologists and scholars consider gender a socially constructed understanding of women and men, as determined by the conceptualization of tasks, role play, public and private life amongst men and women (Carter, 2014). It is essential to note that gender is not equivalent to sex or biological features. Another terminology associated with gender is gender roles. Gender role reflects how people are expected to dress, act, speak, and conduct themselves along with assigned sex or gender (Steensma et al., 2013). For instance, society overwhelmingly and relatively expects women to be humble, polite, and nurturing compare to men. The notion of gender roles is one of the primary root causes of gender stereotyping. More often, gender is a standardized concept. Institutions such as religion, education, politics, the scientific community, family, corporates, job market, and media have entrenched the aspect of gender in their ideologies, images, practices, processes, opportunities, allocation of duties, role functions, and distribution of power and resources. Doing gender another critical term in social and gender studies, where “doing gender" is the notion that gender represents psychologically entrenched social constructs that often manifest in daily human interactions. Doing gender disagrees with the idea that gender represents the innate qualities of individuals. Finally, gender has been perceived as a social construct. What is the social construction of gender? The social construction of gender is a social feminism theory defining and shaping gender along cultural lines, interpersonal interactions, and social group relations prisms of gender perception and manifestations.
As a male, I am consistently pressured and shaped to behave, act, speak and dress in a specific way. My parents, sisters, and peers expect me to dress in a masculine way. Throughout my life, I have lived in a gendered social environment. Our schools and family created a gendered environment where girls were categorized to play together while boys were done the same. Teachers and peers directly influenced gender differentiation by providing boys and girls with different learning opportunities and feedback. Our schooling system allowed us to learn about gender identity and interactions between boys and boys, boys and girls, and girls and girls.
