Visualization
Visualization refers to the formation of mental visual images. It entails processing visual terms or developing mental images of the information or data presented. The process allows one to undertake comparisons and document any differences between and among various concepts. Everyone undertakes visualization differently. However, according to Chris Well’s presentation entitled “Fundamental Design Elements of Data Visualization,” good visualization provides one with an opportunity to tell a story without simplifying it. Therefore, visualization helps an author to tell a story by revealing important patterns to allow the reader undertake comparisons, note trends, and draw appropriate conclusions on the subject of observation.
Comparisons
The main objective of visualization is to present a story in an alternative way and allow comparisons. According to Edward Tufte visualization is used to show comparison, contrasts, and differences. The comparison can be in terms of color, shape, or 3D animation of the data graphic. For example, the image below shows color variations as used to denote a comparison of various sections. The different color schemes represent the time frames of the activity.
Similarly, the image below shows the tendency of forest fires to arise.
Evidently, visualizations is essential in undertaking comparisons, which may occur in a given period. The two maps show the role that intensity and color variation affect. The orange colored sections indicate the high potential for a region to experience forest fire. Therefore the two images provide an excellent show on how color as a visualization technique is rampant in nature.
