The case of John and Tim is a classic example of how some situations call for tough decisions to be made. After the sinking of the ship, it was every man for himself, as ach clung onto whatever thing that could save his life. From the case, it looks like the wooden plank could only support John and not both men. While every person has a right to life, there are some situations where decisions have to be made for the general good of everyone. In this case, John was justified to save himself at the expense of Tim.
John was right because this was a situation involving two people. Quite practically, it was a matter of the wooden plank saving one person, or getting both killed.
